Heavy rain in the forecast for Memorial Day weekend

Heavy rain in the forecast for Memorial Day weekend

According to an update from the US National Hurricane Center (NHC), the sub-tropical storm was located about 55 miles (90km) south of Cosumel, Mexico and about 195 miles (315km) southwest of the western tip of Cuba.

This system may become a tropical depression over the next few days.

- Forecasters have issued tropical storm and storm surge watches for parts of the U.S. Gulf Coast as Subtropical Storm Alberto approaches.

If the system strengthens, it will mark an early start to the 2018 hurricane season, which officially begins June 1.

The overall track of Alberto will be important to the amount of rain that can be expected across the Carolinas.

Heavy rain from Alberto is expected to spread northward and affect the northern Gulf Coast over the holiday weekend.

A tropical storm watch means that tropical storm conditions are possible for the area and time frame described.

However, once Alberto gets into the Gulf, computer models suggest it strengthening into a stronger storm as it enters a more favorable environment.

Heavy rain in the forecast for Memorial Day weekend

Abundant tropical moisture streaming north into the region on the eastern side of newly formed subtropical storm Alberto over the northwest Caribbean will increase the potential for heavy rain across all of Florida on Saturday and continuing through Monday evening.

The Air Force's Hurricane Hunters are scheduled to fly out to investigate the storm Friday.

As much as 7 inches of rain is possible in south Florida, where some areas had more than 14 inches of rain last weekend.

The outlooks issued so far have that regular-unleaded look, but the numbers are never as important as the behaviors of individual storms.

Friday, Governor Rick Scott met with Bay County Sheriff Tommy Ford and Panama City Beach Mayor Mike Thomas to prepare for upcoming impacts from Subtropical Storm Alberto.

And while no one is using the "H" word yet, the National Weather Service in New Orleans said the system could bring "torrential rainfall" to the Gulf Coast.

The storm's sustained winds are expected to intensify to 65 miles per hour over the next three days, as it approaches the northern Gulf coast. The latest forecast has it pushing even farther west of Citrus County.

The main threat for Central Georgia and the Southeast will be heavy rain and flooding.
