Israeli troops kill 2 and injure hundreds, Palestinians say

Veteran Israeli peace activist Gershon Baskin told Arab News that the opening of the US Embassy in Jerusalem "is harmful to chances of peace and goes against global accepted positions that the future of Jerusalem must be decided and resolved by Israel and Palestine together".

The Palestinian president recalled his envoy to Washington following the death of dozens of Palestinians.

The move came after Israeli troops killed at least 60 Palestinians during clashes and protests along the Gaza border against the USA embassy opening in Jerusalem on Monday - the conflict's bloodiest day in years.

German spokesman Steffen Seibert said the violence "concerns us greatly", but also accused Hamas of cynically escalating the unrest.

Gaza was calmer on Tuesday, which for Palestinians marks what they refer to as "Nakba Day" - marking what they call the "catastrophe" of their expulsion when Israel was created 70 years ago.

"I am profoundly alarmed and concerned by the sharp escalation of violence and the number of Palestinians killed and injured in the Gaza protests", António Guterres, the United Nations secretary general, said in a statement on Tuesday.

Chairperson of AU Commission, Moussa Mahamt, on Tuesday, said the relocation of the U.S. Embassy to Jerusalem can only further heighten tensions in the region.

Mariam al-Ghandour, 17, said her daughter, Leila, died after a mix-up led to her being taken to a flashpoint in Gaza during protests.

"We approve every round fired before it is fired".

Hamas said 10 of those killed in Monday's clashes were members of the organisation, though Israel claims that 24 militants were among the fatalities.

"Who among us would accept this type of activity on your border?"

Israel faces mounting regional and global pressure over the deaths of Palestinian protesters on the Gaza border, with South Africa, Turkey, Belgium and Ireland withdrawing their ambassadors from Tel Aviv and the UN Commission on Human Rights calling for an independent inquiry.

For the past six weeks, Palestinians have been holding Gaza border demonstrations demanding access to family land or homes lost to Israel when it was founded in the 1948 Middle East war.

The U.N. rapporteur on human rights in the Palestinian territories, Michael Lynk, said Israel's use of force may amount to a war crime.

Palestinians, who view the eastern part of Jerusalem as the capital of a future Palestinian state, were demonstrating against the opening of the new U.S. Embassy.

A total of some 50,000 Gazans gathered at 13 different sites along the border, burning tires, using bolt cutters and wire cutters to destroy the security barrier, slingshots to hurl rocks, and Molotov fire kites to set fire to Israeli farmland on the other side of the border.

Elsewhere, Ireland summoned Israel's ambassador to protest against the fatalities while Russian Federation and China also expressed their concern over the killings.

The chairperson reiterated the solidarity of the AU with the Palestinian people in their legitimate quest for an independent and sovereign State with East Jerusalem as its capital.

That deal was strongly backed by the United States, which was keen to see Israel make up with one of its very few key Muslim partners.

Netanyahu blamed Hamas for the Gaza violence.

Kuwait's ambassador to the United Nations, Mansour al-Otaibi, said he planned Wednesday to propose a U.N. Security Council resolution on "protection of the Palestinian civilians".

It also complicates the search for a lasting solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, said the chairperson in a statement.
