Nipah Virus: These are the areas affected by NiV in India

Panaji: The Goa government has said that though there is no case of Nipah virus reported in the state so far, it would ask doctors to stay vigilant.

Two more patients with the same symptoms with suspected NiP and fever are now under observation and are being treated in Kozhikode.

An expert team from the National Centre for Disease-Control (NCDC), including its director, Dr Sujeet Kumar Singh and head of epidemiology, Dr S.K. Jain, and a high-level team from the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIMS) are already in Kerala to take stock of the situation. In the Mangaluru cases, both patients are from Kerala and they had met Nipah virus infected people while in hospital. 12 of them have been tested positive for Nipah Virus.

The virus travels through direct contact with a patient. Its hard to manage social media groups who spread misinformation, a senior government official told INDIA TODAY.

The Kozhikode Medical College has 136 patients and nearby Malappuram district 24 patients under observation.

According to the World Health Organization website, NiV was first identified during an outbreak of disease in Kampung Sungai Nipah, Malaysia, in 1998, when pigs were the intermediate hosts.

Nipah is a highly infectious virus carried by fruit bats that causes inflammation of the brain in humans.

In Bangladesh in 2004, humans became infected with NiV as a result of consuming date palm sap that had been contaminated by infected fruit bats.

While 45 people succumbed to the virus when it broke out in Siliguri town in West Bengal, some five people died in the second outbreak in 2007 in the state's Nadia district.

Nipah was first identified in 1998 after pig farmers were infected in the village of Kampung Sungai Nipah, in Malaysia.

The incubation period (interval from infection to the onset of symptoms) is believed to range between from 4-14 days.

Treatment options are limited mostly to supportive care. Eating food which may have the droplets of saliva of infected bats can lead to the transmission of the virus. Human to human contact as well as animal to human contacts have been documented.

According to a health ministry official, the infection has a high mortality rate.
