NIS increases airport screenings to prevent Ebola outbreak

Nigeria was hailed as having contained the virus in 2014, with 8 deaths, following fears that it could spread through the commercial capital of some 20 million inhabitants and across Africa's most populous country of around 180 million people.

Ebola virus outbreak control depends on surveillance and the isolation of cases, according to the study.

The latest Ebola outbreak in the region northeast of Kinshasa near the border with the Republic of Congo has so far killed 17 people.

"On Monday, blood samples from five patients in the DRC, particularly in a particular district in DRC, two of the five cases, Ebola was actually confirmed".

Cases of hemorrhagic fever were reported in an area of Congo facing an Ebola epidemic as long ago as December and the first deaths were reported in January, the World Health Organisation said on Thursday, as four new suspected cases surfaced.

A source at the airport confirmed the development to our correspondent, saying, "Though relevant authorities especially the Port Health Services desk have been doing their job but with the directive coming from the government and the outbreak of the disease in Congo, all hands are now more on deck to arrest any eventuality". All the neighbouring countries have been alerted. MedlinePlus website, Ebola is "severe" and "often fatal".

A new outbreak of the disease has been confirmed by the DRC Ministry of Health in the north-west of the country, near the town of Ikoko Impenge, next to the town of Bikoro.

The WHO said that it is working closely with the DRC government to contain the spread of the viral disease.

The outbreak comes after the World Bank stated a year ago that Earth isn't ready for an "inevitable" pandemic, after stimulating four possible scenarios.

Peter Salama, WHO deputy director-general, emergency preparedness and response, welcomed the United Kingdom support.

A study released previous year also suggested disease "superspreaders" fueled the transmission of the 2014 Ebola epidemic.

It revealed that very high proportions of potentially affected populations would need to be protected by vaccination to establish herd immunity, i.e. the level of immunity that prevents virus transmission within a population.

At least two thirds of the victims who contracted the virus can be traced back to this small group.
