Nobel literature prize award postponed amid turmoil over sex scandal

"The Swedish Academy intends to decide on and announce the Nobel Prize in Literature for 2018 in parallel with the naming of the 2019 laureate", it said.

Three members of the Swedish Academy resigned earlier this year in the wake of the decision not to suspend Frostenson.

But the usually secretive Academy acknowledged it needed time to restore public trust after allegations against the husband of one of its members and the admission that the names of some prize-winners had been leaked. The a year ago the award was postponed was in 1943, CNN reports, at the height of World War II.

Each year, the institution receives around 350 nominations submitted by those eligible to do so: former Nobel literature laureates, members of other countries' equivalent academies, literature professors, and the heads of national writers' associations.

For the first time in nearly 70 years there will be no Nobel Literature Prize this year, after the Swedish Academy that selects the laureate failed to contain a deep crisis stemming from the anti-sexual harassment #MeToo campaign.

A number of of the alleged incidents reportedly occurred in properties belonging to the high-profile organisation.

A law firm was commissioned in November to investigate sexual harassment allegations by 18 women against Arnault. Most obviously, his wife, the poet Katarina Frostenson, is herself a member, and the two are co-owners of Forum, a Stockholm cultural centre funded by the Academy - which is itself claimed to have been the setting for some of Mr. Arnault's acts of abuse, some of which date back over twenty years.

"We find it necessary to commit time to recovering public confidence in the academy before the next laureate can be announced", Olsson said in a statement.

The man has also been accused of leaking the Names of previous laureates.

The Academy, one of Sweden's most highly respected institutions, made the announcement on Friday morning following a meeting of its remaining 10 active members late on Thursday.

"In addition, routines will be tightened regarding conflict-of-interest issues and the management of information classified as secret", the academy announced. Eight members of 18 are no longer academy participants, which will impede its work, and make it hard to evaluate the different authors nominated for the Nobel Prize in literature in particular.

A reform of the organization will soon allow members to leave voluntarily, so that they can be replaced by successors.

The academy's statutes require a quorum of 12 to vote in any new members. Since its inaugural edition in 1901, the literature prize has been withheld seven times over the years, largely during the First and Second World Wars.

This is not the first time this has happened. The 1936 award went to Eugene O'Neill.

Faulkner was awarded the 1949 prize for "his powerful and artistically unique contribution to the modern American novel", while Russell received the 1950 prize "in recognition of his varied and significant writings in which he champions humanitarian ideals and freedom of thought".
