Payet limps off injured for Marseille

Diego Simeone hopes Antoine Griezmann's Europa League final brace for Atletico Madrid will help convince him to remain at the club next season.

Of the six previous occasions that a Spanish team has reached the Europa League final, only one of them has not gone on to win - however, that came in 2011/12 when Athletic Club were beaten by fellow Spanish side Atlético (0-3).

"I think the expectation in Marseille and across the country is quite extraordinary and our motivation comes from that", said Dimitri Payet, who is confident of beng fully fit after a minor muscle injury.

Marseille was going for a second European trophy, 25 years after winning the Champions League, but ultimately had no answer to Griezmann's mobility and finishing.

"You need your best players at their best level in this kind of game", Marseille coach Rudi Garcia said. Now we are in the UEFA Super Cup, so he could play four finals with us.

They had started well and had a great chance to open the scoring inside four minutes, Valere Germain shooting over after being slipped in by Payet. He could play off the front two of Griezmann and Diego Costa, offering the same kind of threat that saw him score the victor at Getafe in La Liga at the weekend.

His future has been the subject of intense speculation of late, with many linking him to the vacant job at Arsenal and while now would be the flawless time to end his tenure with Atletico, it looks like Simeone is happy in the Spanish capital. Both of Griezmann's goals were superbly finished after naive mistakes from the French side, while Gabi's late clincher came just after substitute Clinton Njie had butchered his side's last chance to make a game of it.

"I left home at 14 years old because I wanted to win trophies, this is my second after the Supercopa, and I hope there can be more". He's made me into a better player and one of the best in the world.

"I am happy", he continued.

But before we all go ahead and start saying how Griezmann is hilariously original with doing these celebrations, the first group I remember seeing do this is the UMBC basketball team. They also lost Champions League finals to Real Madrid in 2014 and 2016, and the gulf in experience was evident.
