RED's Hydrogen One will be available at AT&T and Verizon this summer

That widespread availability is a nice feather in the cap for the Hydrogen One, a $1,200 Android phone that's said to boast a revolutionary 3D display.

We still don't know exactly when RED Hydrogen One pre-orders will start being fulfilled, let alone when sales are supposed to begin for new buyers, but both Verizon and AT&T are throwing their weight behind the mobile "4-View holographic" project.

AT&T and Verizon announced their plans to sell the handsets manufactured by Red in separate announcements on May 17. At RED Studios in Los Angeles on Saturday, the media is invited to get a private sneak peek at Hydrogen One. And you won't need glasses or an augmented reality headset to view images popping out of the Hydrogen One's display, which also feature a more conventional 3D mode.

We do know that it will be available on the Verizon Up rewards program, so every $300 spent on monthly bills can be turned into prizes - from VIP tickets to everyday rewards. In theory, that means you will be able to look around, below, and even into the screen's image.

Red also says that the Hydrogen One will be a modular phone, capable of adding on accessories - most of which sound like they'll be geared toward adding to the camera's capabilities. The phone is the first consumer handset from Red, the company better known for its high-end digital cameras used to create Hollywood films.

Details of the Hydrogen One first surfaced last July. The carrier hasn't disclosed any specific release date, but it certainly looks like the Hydrogen One is going to soon be available in stores. RED is no longer taking pre-orders, which had been priced at $1295 for an aluminum version and $1595 for a titanium model.
