United States sanctions Iran central bank governor for terrorist support

Valiollah Seif, the governor of the Iranian central bank, was named a "specially designated global terrorist" along with another senior official, Ali Tarzali, who works in the central bank's worldwide division.

Seif is also under attack inside Iran.

"OFAC is designating Valiollah Seif, Iran's Central Bank Governor, for assisting, sponsoring, or providing financial, material, or technological support for, or financial or other services to or in support of, the IRGC-QF", read a portion of the Treasury's statement on new sanctions.

"Seif has conspired with the IRGC-QF to move millions of dollars through the global financial system in a variety of foreign currencies to allow the IRGC-QF to fund its activities overseas", the U.S. Treasury Department said in a statement.

"The United States will not permit Iran's increasingly brazen abuse of the global financial system", said US Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin.

Tuesday's action seeks to cut off what the USA called a "critical" banking network for Iran and deny those blacklisted access to the global financial system.

Iran's foreign minister had said last week that the nation will not renegotiate the 2015 Iran nuclear deal.
