Zverev beats Shapovalov, to face Thiem in Madrid final

Thiem, seeded fifth, had saved 13 of 20 break points he faced before the final, but Zverev converted on two of his four opportunities in the championship match without facing a break point himself.

South African Anderson, seeded sixth, was playing in his first Masters 1000 semi-final but faded after a solid start.

MADRID-Canada's Denis Shapovalov dropped a 6-4, 6-1 decision to second-seeded Alexander Zverev in semifinal play Saturday at the Madrid Open.

'But, on the other hand, I haven't watched the match but I watched just the highlights and things like that.

Winning Madrid now, makes him the fifth active player to win at least three ATP Masters 1000 titles, joining Rafael Nadal (31), Djokovic (30), Roger Federer (27) and Murray (14).

In my opinion, this head to head record is utterly irrelevant and simply based 12-month clay data, my model liked Zverev as a marginal [2.12] underdog, pricing him up as a [1.76] favourite. "Maybe tomorrow or next week or in a few weeks I can really look back on a great week and know I'm on the right way". The lower-ranked Austrian also won their last meeting (at Rotterdam Open in February last year).

Zverev has always been marked out as a future star of the men's game and his 6-4, 6-4 victory over Thiem suggests the German can be a major threat at the French Open later this month.

The Croat was forced to withdraw from the Masters 1000 event at the Caja Magica due to injury, but is back in action at the Italian Open this week.

Nadal defeated Stan Wawrinka in straight sets previous year to win the French Open for a record 10th time.

Edmund lost his cool towards the end of a tight second set when he stopped after a spectator called out, and Shapovalov proceeded to serve an ace.

Zverev broke Thiem's opening service games in each set to win in 1 hour, 19 minutes.

"It gave me a huge boost of confidence", Thiem said. We're not playing a game where the differences are big or massive. Thiem has won eight of his last 10 matches on clay court.

Thiem won again on clay in 2016, defeating the German in the final in Nice in the run-up to the French Open in three sets 6-4 3-6 6-0. "So far it's been pretty good for me on clay this year". Past year I made it to the finals in every single tournament.

"I've been in this moment before", Zverev said.
