Maryland was among the 49 states that saw an increase in suicide rates from 1999 to 2016, according to a report released this week by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, but the state's rates did not rise as sharply as the national average.

This week, we lost two celebrities to suicide in television host Anthony Bourdain and designer Kate Spade.

Almost 45,000 lives were lost to suicide in 2016 alone.

"Research for many years and across social and health science fields has demonstrated a strong relationship between economic downturns and an increase in deaths due to suicide", Sarah Burgard an associate professor of sociology at the University of MI, explained in an email on Thursday.

Dr. Deborah Stone, the CDC's lead researcher, told the BBC that while there is no single factor that leads to suicide, relationship issues and financial troubles tend to be top contributory factors. Substance abuse was also common among those who died by suicide, particularly among those with a known history of mental health conditions.

That same report shows suicides in Arizona are up 17 percent over the same time period. It provides free and confidential support 24 hours a day, seven days a week for people in suicidal crisis or distress.

Mental health problems, often undiagnosed, are usually involved and experts say knowing warning signs and who is at risk can help stop a crisis from becoming a tragedy.

Other studies have found much higher rates of mental-health disorders among people at high risk of suicide, experts noted.

Despite the steadiness of the suicide rate in the state, Allen says there is a lot of work to do.

Bourdain and Spade died at 61 and 55, respectively - an age cohort with strikingly high suicide rates in the USA, according to the CDC. The World Health Organization estimates a global suicide rate of one death every 40 seconds, which by 2020 they predict will increase to one every 20 seconds.

Suicide can be prevent through intervention and treatment and that's where McEnroe and his team at Emerge Family Therapy come in.

Suicide rates varied from 6.9 per 100,000 residents a year in the District of Columbia to 29.2 per 100,000 in Montana. "Over time, I figured out and learned through trial and error what worked for me to get past that feeling", said Mike Bushman of Naperville.

In exactly half of US states, the suicide rate increased more than 30 percent. "What we know for sure is that telling and talking and connecting with people is the path to healing, so we need to create more pathways for that".

"We have to keep working on stigma", Zietlow-DeJesus said.
