Canadian PM rejects NAFTA sunset clause but open to discussions

Shortly after Trump tweeted, respected Republican Senator John McCain responded. Trump, in a Twitter tirade on Thursday, pointed fingers at Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and French president Emmanuel Macron, stating that "they are charging the USA massive tariffs and create non-monetary barriers".

Kudlow suggested Trump saw Trudeau as trying to weaken his hand before that meeting, saying the president won't "let a Canadian prime minister push him around".

"The Prime Minister said nothing he hasn't said before - both in public, and in private conversations with the President", it stated, adding that the Canadian government remains "focused on everything we accomplished here at the summit".

"I have made it very clear to the President that it is not something we relish doing, but it is something that we absolutely will do", Trudeau said.

"Particularly, [they] did not take lightly that it's for a national security reason that for Canadians ... who stood shoulder to shoulder with American soldiers in far-off lands in conflicts from the first World War onwards, it's kind of insulting", said Trudeau.

Trump will skip part of the summit on Saturday as he travels to Singapore to meet with North Korean dictator Kim Jong Un in hopes of resolving the North Korean nuclear crisis.

Now, Trump and foreign leaders face a string of trade decisions that will either preserve the existing global economic system or reshape it, with millions of jobs and trillions of dollars hanging in the balance.

In a message earlier on Friday on Twitter, Trump said the talks at the summit would "mostly center on the long time unfair trade practiced against the USA".

"He is not going to permit any show of weakness on the trip to negotiate with North Korea", he said.

"He was even willing to sign that socialist communique".

French President Emmanuel Macron addresses a press conference at the conclusion of the G7 Summit on June 9, 2018 in La Malbaie, Canada. "I think President Trump knows that".

Another posting says he is looking forward to straightening out unfair trade deals with the G7 countries. The member states imposed sanctions.

But French officials have indicated the European Union and USA will establish a dialogue on trade within the next two weeks, signalling a modest step forward at G7.

As we reported earlier, Jens Stoltenberg, NATO Secretary General, said that NATO did not intend to isolate Russian Federation, but to apply a double approach - deterrence against aggression and political dialogue.

Earlier on Saturday, Trump told reporters it would be "very easy" to make the case for tariffs on auto imports using the rationale that they threaten national security.

The six-plus-one tone of the gathering in Quebec means the leaders from Canada, Britain, the US, France, Germany Italy and Japan are unlikely to issue a joint statement as they remain sharply divided on trade and the environment to reach consensus.

Trudeau's office said he had not said anything in his closing G7 news conference he has not said to Trump before.
