But why can't Neymar come and Cristiano stay?

Real Madrid vice-captain Marcelo says he sees no reason why Cristiano Ronaldo and Neymar can not play together for the club, while acknowledging that president Florentino Perez has the final say on everything that happens at the Bernabeu.

These claims echo similar reports in Spain, in which 'AS' report that Jorge Mendes had meet with Madrid representatives but that the players and clubs demands were on opposite ends of the spectrum.

Perez's public stance on the issue has been very clear, with the club chief regularly saying the player is under contract for another three years, something he again repeated during last months' Champions League final celebrations in Kiev.

After talking about his stint as a Real player in past tense, the five-time Ballon d'Or victor gave ambiguous answers when he was asked to clarify his post-match comments later in the day. "It is hard to be at a better place than Madrid, the best club in the world, but life is not just about glory".

"For me Cristiano is the best at the moment and Neymar, for sure, will be as good as Cristiano".

According to reports, Ronaldo is said to have "various dissatisfactions" with Real - including his wage packet which is said to be lower than Lionel Messi and Neymar's.

Could the Brazilians also pair up at Real?

"I don't have any doubts, it's not important, I have to rest now, go and meet up with the Portugal team and in the next few weeks (I'll make an announcement)", he added. "We are not favourites but in football nothing is impossible".

Ronaldo has had a least a share of the Champions League scoring title in six straight seasons, and said as much after the win in the Champions League final as part of his brewing frustration.

His mother has also admitted she wants the 33-year-old back playing in the famous red shirt in which he became one of the best footballers in the world and has since staked his claim as one of the best ever.
