In Austria, Putin calls for lifting sanctions, Kurz sticks by European Union position

On global questions, he said he believes other countries wrongly regard Russian Federation as a threat and that mistaken concept can end if they see that the economic sanctions the West has put on Russian Federation don't serve their interests.

Putin also pushed back on the idea that Russian businessman Yevgeny Prigozhin, who has been indicted by special counsel Robert Mueller and bankrolled a Russian troll farm, could somehow have swayed us elections.

During the visit, Chinese President Xi Jinping and Putin will hold small- and large-scale talks, meet the press together, attend signing ceremonies and welcome banquets, and exchange views on bilateral relations, cooperation in key areas, and other worldwide and regional issues of common concern, said Hua.

Putin and Trump spoke briefly at the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation summit in Vietnam last November, and had two encounters during the G-20 summit in Germany last July.

Although polls show that Putin remains popular, the fact that he first became president 18 years ago means the Kremlin needs to ward off any public fatigue with the leader.

"The sanctions and all the restrictions imposed for political reasons. are no way to resolve political issues", Putin said after talks in Vienna with his Austrian counterpart Alexander Van der Bellen.

Asked what the best joke he had heard recently, Putin cited what he said was commentary in a German publication that Trump "is pushing Europe right into Putin's hands".

"The threat of mutual destruction has always restrained participants of the global arena, prevented leading military powers from making hasty moves, and compelled participants to respect each other", the Russian leader said. In response to one, Putin reassured viewers that "World War III" isn't near. "If you put it together with an earlier joke that Russian Federation had influenced the USA election, all in all it sounds quite amusing: We have allegedly meddled with the presidential election in the USA and Trump as a thank you has presented us with Europe".

Speaking to Austria's ORF channel ahead of a visit to Vienna on Wednesday, Mr Putin said he "fully agreed" with the US President on the possibility that a new arms race between the countries could break out, and hoped the two leaders could work together to prevent it.

'In a recent telephone conversation, Donald said he was anxious about the possibility of a new arms race.

"The tragedy we are talking about is awful, and I feel immensely sorry for the victims and their families, but this investigation must be objective and comprehensive", he said.

Putin also said the government will be looking to streamline the tax system in order to fight poverty, but denied speculation that Russian Federation was considering abandoning its flat-rate income tax. The Mach-10 Dagger missile and a laser weapon were already in service, he said. "Well, here it's Mr. Prigozhin's private business".

Putin will get to showcase Russian Federation beginning next week, as the country begins hosting the World Cup.

Some of those questions, which Putin did not attempt to answer, were politically awkward.

"Why is there money for tanks, bombs, planes and machine guns in this country, but not for people?" read one, but the presenters ignored it.

Putin addressed the March 4 nerve agent attack on former Russian double agent Sergei Skripal and his daughter Yulia Skripal in Britain.

Putin is set to arrive in China on Friday for a three-day visit, during which he will attend the annual meeting of the Shanghai Co-operation Organisation, a military and economic bloc focused on Eurasia.
