Kawhi Leonard and Gregg Popovich have 'good meeting'

Kawhi Leonard and Gregg Popovich have 'good meeting'

If Leonard found his way to Laker Land, where he would likely make it clear that he'd re-sign as a free agent in the summer of 2019, it is widely believed that it would significantly increase the Lakers' chances of landing LeBron James in free agency this summer.

Leonard would prefer to sign with the Los Angeles Lakers over the Los Angeles Clippers.

According to Yahoo Sports, the meeting between Popovich and Leonard had been planned for weeks and was not a direct response to Leonard's desire for a trade becoming public.

According to ESPN, the Spurs have been largely reluctant to give teams guidance on the players, or packages, that would interest them in trades.

ESPN initially reported that Popovich was flying to California to meet with Leonard before Thursday's (Friday, PHL time) Draft before amending its report to indicate the meeting had taken place on Tuesday (Wednesday, PHL time).

It appears Kawhi Leonard wants out of San Antonio one way or the other.

The two-time All-Star is reportedly looking to leave San Antonio and is not concerned with missing out on the supermax contract of five years and $219 million that he is eligible for.

Leonard played just nine games this past season, plagued by injury.

Leonard had been struggling to recover from an injury as the season dragged on but had always been expected to reach the playoffs. Knowing Leonard won't re-sign with them in 2019 makes it hard for any other team to give up anything of value for Leonard. Few situations would be better prepared to be in championship mode than Kawhi, James, Aldridge and Pop's special ability to get the best out of San Antonio's role players.
