The Office Tavern Grill, which has three locations across New Jersey, is offering savory Buffalo Chicken Doughnuts for the special occasion. From Saturday to Wednesday, any size or combo is buy-one-get-one free.

Started by The Salvation Army on the first Friday in June in 1938, National Donut Day was created to honor the Donut Lassies who served the sweet treats to soldiers on the frontlines of WWI.

The national holiday is observed on June 1 every year. So that means hint, hint: Go early! The free donuts included in the offer are Boston Kreme, Glazed and Strawberry Frosted with Sprinkles.

While not a donut shop, Papa John's is offering a free order of the pizza chain's warm donut holes Friday with any online purchase.

That's while supplies last, of course.

Local businesses and The Salvation Army will be celebrating the 81st annual National Donut Day on Friday.

This Sydney Street business is full of creative doughnut and crounut flavours, but the most exciting thing happening at the store today is free coffee.

Duck Donuts, a chain with locations throughout Texas, the Midwest, and the East Coast, is also giving away free classic donuts with no strings attached. Their deals include six for $5 and a dozen doughnuts for $8.50. "National Doughnut Day gives us the ideal opportunity to show our appreciation to our customers and to get out the word to others that we'd like them to try what everyone is talking about", he said.
