No Nipah virus in TN: Minister

The Nipah virus, which is spread by fruit bats, can cause a communicable disease that can be fatal for both animals and humans.

"The person admitted himself to the hospital, after he felt he had some symptoms similar to those affected by Nipah and he has been kept in the isolation ward", he said.

Chennai: In a bid to dispel rumours and panic among general public over the risky Nipah which claimed 14 lives in Kerala, State Health Minister C Vijayabaskar today said that the virus has not entered Tamilnadu.

Brain damaging Nipah virus has lead to death of over 10 people so far in the southern state.

Separately, tests run on dead bats in the northern state of Himachal Pradesh were negative for Nipah, an official there said.

Of some 116 suspected cases sent for testing in recent weeks, 15 have been confirmed as Nipah, the Kerala government said on its website http://bit.ly/2GUSi3T on Monday.

AT least 13 individuals have died after a breakout of the uncommon Nipah virus in India - which has sparked fears of a worldwide epidemic.

About 160 samples were sent for tests to the National Virology Institute (NVI) Pune and 15 cases tested positive, Kerala health department sources said. Earlier this month, he reportedly had stated that freedom fighters Bhagat Singh and Lala Lajpat Rai made sacrifice for the country, unlike Nehru and Gandhi who did not bear even a single stick.

The Department of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Services, Nagaland on Sunday said the department was keeping a tight vigil with constant updates on information through the Animal Disease Monitoring and Surveillance Cell on the Nipah virus.

Mangos, dates and bananas - the preferred food of the fruit bats - have all been banned.

The virus has killed about 260 people since it first spread across Bangladesh, Malaysia and India back in 1998.
