NY sues Trump for 'illegal conduct' at family foundation

The lawsuit aims to dissolve the foundation and ensure none of its directors can serve any not-for-profit in NY state in the future.

The legal dispute, which was filed in Manhattan state Supreme Court and coincides with Trump's 72nd birthday, alleges that donations were used to help pay for the president's political, personal, and business dealings. "The Investigation found that the Foundation operated without any oversight by a functioning board of directors", the lawsuit states.

It says the real estate tycoon elected president in 2016 used charity funds from the foundation to pay his legal bills, promote his Trump-branded hotels, and for personal spending - including the ostensible charity purchase of a portrait of Trump that was then mounted on the wall at one of his golf clubs.

The lawsuit adds to Trump's legal problems, including an investigation by Special Counsel Robert Mueller into whether his 2016 campaign colluded with Russian Federation. Oh, and the suit also accuses Trump of criminal perjury! In recent days, Trump has issued pardons for federal crimes and is reportedly considering other pardons.

Democrat Barbara Underwood filed the suit against the Trump Foundation and its directors, Mr Trump and his children Donald Trump Jr, Eric Trump and Ivanka Trump. Page 16 of the petition includes a photograph of Trump presenting an enlarged Trump Foundation check to the organization Support Siouxland Soldiers at one of his campaign events.

Underwood seeks to dissolve the Trump Foundation and requested $2.8 million in restitution.

The White House did not have an immediate comment.

But Trump's foundation cut a $25,000 check in 2013 to Republican Florida Attorney General Pam Bondi's re-election campaign, the lawsuit notes. "This statutory prohibition is absolute".

During the investigation, a NY state investigator asked Trump Organization employee Allen Weisselberg if he knew that he was treasurer of the Trump Foundation.

"Mr. Trump ran the Foundation according to his whim, rather than the law", the lawsuit on.ny.gov/2lbdv0V said.

"I won't settle this case!" he wrote. Trump held the fundraiser instead of participating in the final GOP presidential debate before the Iowa caucuses.

The list was created by another campaign staffer, Lisa Maciejowski Gambuzza, and edited by a third, Stuart Jolly, a political director.

She took over last month from Eric Schneiderman, who had opened several investigations into Mr Trump, but was forced to resign amid allegations of sexual misconduct.

"The president added: ".Schneiderman, who ran the Clinton campaign in NY, never had the guts to bring this ridiculous case, which lingered in their office for nearly 2 years. Trump has denied there was any collusion, and Russian Federation has denied meddling in the election. If nothing else, Ms Underwood's action on Thursday moved the Trump Foundation closer to an end.
