Kim Jong Un invited Donald Trump to visit North Korea during their historic summit and the US President accepted, Pyongyang state media reported Wednesday, calling it the start of a "radical switchover" in the nuclear-armed Cold War foes' fraught relations.

North Korea's state-run media is framing the agreements reached at the Singapore summit as a "step-by-step" process meant to bring USA rewards in exchange for gradual moves by Pyongyang to dismantle its nuclear program.

President Trump and North Korea's Kim Jong Un are signing a joint agreement, although the exact details are still unknown.

The agreement said the two countries would co-operate towards "new relations", while the United States would provide "security guarantees" to North Korea.

At Tuesday's summit, Trump told reporters that the negotiations had gone "better than anybody could have expected".

Republican Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell congratulated Trump on taking a "major step. that will lead to an historic peace".

Xi's pre-summit meetings with Kim helped restore ties that had been frosty since both leaders took power around the same time about six years ago.

Before the two leaders shared a lunch with their teams for the first time ever, Trump began to joke around about their weight with photographers.

While expressing cautious optimism about events of the past 48 hours, Bishop stressed the strength of the agreement between Trump and Kim Jong-un "will only be as good as the verification process that North Korea allows". For one thing, North Korea's commitment on "complete denuclearization" is simply a repeat of its previous promise from the inter-Korean summit in April, and it lacks a clear definition.

Speaking in an interview with ABC's George Stephanopoulos after a sit-down with Kim, Trump said you could see "the fervor" felt by people in North Korea for Kim. We fly in bombers from Guam... to practice and drop bombs all over the place and then go back to Guam.

"I said, I have something to say from North Korea". The president said North Korea "more brutally oppressed its people than any regime on earth".

"China of course welcomes and supports this", Wang said of the talks.

Kim has framed the switch as a natural next step now that he has what he stresses is a credible and viable nuclear arsenal capable of keeping the U.S.at bay. It's a resounding success for Kim - and one that is likely to be exploited back home for political objective.

"Anybody who thinks we're going to fix 50 years-plus of major challenges here in one meeting is not being realistic".

News of the decision to halt the drills stoked concern in Japan, with Defense Minister Itsunori Onodera calling joint exercises and the USA military presence in South Korea "vital" to East Asian security.

In China, Pompeo's biggest task will nearly certainly be to make sure the government holds up its end of the bargain enforcing the sanctions regime which the US bolstered in recent months and which Trump credits for bringing Kim to the negotiating table.
