Shujaat Bukhari was a courageous heart, fought fearlessly for peace: Rahul Gandhi

Shujaat Bukhari, the editor of Rising Kashmir, one of the region's leading newspapers, was killed as he was leaving the paper's office in downtown Srinagar, when the gunmen attacked his auto.

Buhkari and his PSO were shot dead by unidentified gunmen in the heart of Srinagar. Reportedly, two motor-cycle borne gunmen fired indiscriminately upon Bhukhari when he was heading towards his home.

Witnesses said Bukhari died on the spot while the assailants fled immediately after the attack. They have been shot and have been taken to the hospital as well. Many questioned the effectiveness of the "unilateral ceasefire" which the Modi government had declared a month ago in view of Ramzan and the consensual demand of the Mehbooba Mufti-led BJP-PDP coalition government and the opposition in Jammu & Kashmir.

BJP national general secretary Ram Madhav called the killing of journalist Shujaat Bukhari "Reprehensible and condemnable cowardly act of the terrorists".

Shujaat Bukhari was given police protection since an attack on him in 2000. It's not clear, who attacked the journalist, but the development has sent shock waves in the media fraternity across India.

Union Minister for Information and Broadcasting Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore said the murder was a brutal attack on freedom of press.

While praying for his heavenly abode, JKLF chairman has expressed heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family. It is an attempt to silence the saner voices of Kashmir.

Bukhari had been part of India's delegation for informal peace talks on Kashmir with Pakistani representatives held in Dubai past year.
