Sonos Unveils New 'Sonos Beam' Soundbar With AirPlay 2, Alexa

Most modern TV's support both ARC and CEC, but it's usually only people using high-end audio receivers that ever use it. At only 25.6 inches long, Sonos Beam won't hang off furniture, block the TV or overwhelm your space.

At 651 x 100 x 68.5mm and 2.8kg, it is more compact than the PlayBar and has a flat smooth layer on top with the buttons and controls. If your TV doesn't support HDMI-ARC, use the included Optical Audio Adapter to connect Beam to the TV's optical audio port. ● Comes in black and white fabric with matte finishes. It can be wall-mounted or placed on furniture and will work with other Sonos speakers in your home.

Better yet and the company says the Sonos One, Playbase, and second gen Play:5 will gain support for AirPlay 2 in July as well. The Sonos Beam is a three-channel system (left, right and center), but for those who want the complete 5.1 surround sound experience, you can pair the Sonos Beam with two Sonos Ones (or two Play:1s) and a Sonos Sub. It can also link to other speakers from Sonos around a home and be controlled with a physical remote or via Inc.'s Alexa digital-voice assistant, Sonos said Wednesday during a presentation in San Francisco.

The Sonos Beam was the star attraction of today's event, but Sonos also reiterated its committed to working with all voice control assistants.

That makes it an obvious follow-up to the likes of the Sonos Playbar and the Sonos Playbase which were the company's previous living room efforts.

The thing to remember is that the Sonos Beam's voice controls are still contingent on your smart devices and what services you subscribe to.

Sonos Beam will be available June 17 for $399 with pre-orders beginning today. And, emulating the One, thanks to a built-in five far-field microphone array, the Beam can be used to access the Alexa digital assistant for the usual queries and instructions, as well as Alexa-enabled video streaming devices such as Fire TV.
