Trump torpedoes G7 united front as summit ends

Trump advisers described Trudeau's statements as a slight that threatened to make the USA look weak right as the president was leaving for a summit with North Korean dictator Kim Jong Un.

"Trump declared that the trading policy of foreign countries with the USA is unfair, claiming that there is an "$800 Billion Trade Deficit", a figure that is as yet unsubstantiated by expert research.

"Sorry, we can not let our friends, or enemies, take advantage of us on Trade anymore. We must put the American worker first!"

Mr Trump went on to say that the United States gets "unfairly clobbered" on trade despite "protecting Europe at great financial loss".

"The European Union had a $151 Billion Surplus-should pay much more for Military!"

Germany pays 1% (slowly) of GDP towards North Atlantic Treaty Organisation, while we pay 4% of a MUCH larger GDP. "But to walk away from our allies in this way, I think, is a mistake".

Trump had set a very confrontational tone ahead of the summit by slapping tariffs on steel and aluminium imports from Canada and the European Union, and calling for Russian Federation to be let back into the summit.

Canadian officials, including Mr Trudeau, have fanned across America as part of a months-long charm offensive to appeal to pro-trade Republicans at every level.

In comments published on Monday, he told newspapers from the Redaktionsnetzwerk Deutschland association that "everyone knows how much is at stake".

Trump also said he might double down on import tariffs by hitting the sensitive auto industry, throwing the G7's efforts to show a united front into disarray.

"While I have serious concerns about President Trump's approach to trade talks with Canada, Prime Minister Trudeau has placed our trade relationship with Canada at risk by publicly feuding with President Trump on the world stage", Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi said in a statement.

North Atlantic Treaty Organisation members, in general, make financial contributions based on their economic output, and as a result of being the world's biggest economy the United States does contribute a larger amount than other nations.

Insulting the host, alienating allies and threatening to suspend business with other countries: President Donald Trump was in full trade-warrior form for the weekend summit of the Group of Seven wealthy democracies in Canada. Trump said that he withdrew the USA from the G-7's joint statement because of that slight.

Trump's presidency has been clouded by a federal investigation into alleged Russian meddling in the 2016 presidential election, and possible collusion by his campaign.

British Prime Minister Theresa May "is fully supportive" of Trudeau and his leadership, a senior United Kingdom government source said, while European Council President Donald Tusk tweeted: "There is a special place in heaven for @JustinTrudeau".

"People can't charge us 270 percent and we charge them nothing, that doesn't work anymore", he said. "We'll either leave it the way it is as a threesome deal" and "change it very substantially", Trump said Saturday in La Malbaie, speaking to reporters before departing the Group of Seven leaders' meeting.

On Twitter, Mr. Trump called his remarks "very dishonest and weak", citing Canada's imposition of tariffs on dairy products.

Trudeau, in Quebec City for bilateral meetings with non-G7 leaders after the summit, did not comment as he arrived.

The president blasted Trudeau and said the US would not endorse the communique.

After bashing Trudeau and the other attendees, President Trump's top economic advisor actually took to CNN Sunday morning, claiming Prime Minister Trudeau "stabbed" America "in the back".

Kudlow, who was in Canada with President Trump for the G-7 meeting, told CNN on Sunday that the US had come to an agreement with the other highly-industrialized nations in the group on a joint communique until Trudeau's "sophomoric play".

"There's a special place in hell for any foreign leader that engages in bad faith diplomacy with President Donald J. Trump and then tries to stab him in the back on the way out the door", Trump trade adviser Peter Navarro said in an interview nationally broadcast Sunday in the United States.
