White House won't say why Trump hasn't fired Sessions

But Trump vented his ire anew in a Twitter remark, citing a television interview comment from Republican Congressman Trey Gowdy that Sessions, a former Alabama senator and early Trump political supporter, had not told Trump before he was named to the country's top legal position that he would remove himself from control of the Russian Federation investigation.

The president has been intermittently criticizing the attorney general because he recused himself from the investigation by special counsel Robert Mueller into Russian election interference and alleged collusion. He cited Republican Rep. Trey Gowdy's comments on "CBS This Morning". "I told the president at the time that I just didn't know what I would have done", Giuliani said.

The discussion on MSNBC's Morning Joe stemmed from a New York Times report on Wednesday saying Sessions could be a key witness in a potential obstruction of justice case against Trump since the president reportedly asked him back in March of a year ago to undo his recusal from the Russian Federation investigation.

"And when he asks "Should I have done that?' I say 'No, the way it is now has worked out", Giuliani said. The fact that the FBI source spoke with "people on the periphery of the campaign", he said, "is standard operating procedure in intelligence gathering and in criminal investigations".

Giuliani said Trump consulted him last summer during the height of his rage about Sessions' recusal.

But Gowdy admitted he found it odd that the Federal Bureau of Investigation didn't offer Trump a defensive briefing during the campaign to notify him of his three campaign officials' Russian contacts.

Trump and Giuliani tried to label that informant a spy and invented the term "spygate" in hopes of discrediting Mueller's investigation, but those efforts appear not to have caught on.

Sessions, one of the president's earliest supporters, has often found himself on the receiving end of Trump's ire. Hours after the president's attack on Wednesday, Sessions visited the White House for a routine litigation issue, a Justice Department official said. The informant, a retired American professor and foreign policy expert for Republican presidents, reportedly talked to some of Trump's campaign advisers who had ties to Russian Federation. Mr. Trump blames Sessions for the very existence of the special counsel because he believes if Sessions had been attorney general, he would have resisted a special counsel appointment. That's a problem because Trump wanted him in the middle of it; a loyalist who could and would (if the president had his way) stop the "witch hunt".

"What if we were wrong?" he asked aides with him in the presidential limousine.

If FBI investigators were to discover wrongdoing by Trump and he did become a target, a prior public announcement would have created a duty for the FBI to correct its past statement, Comey said.
