CDC: 200+ Cases Of Infections Following Parasites In Del Monte Vegetables

Del Monte has recalled a number of vegetable trays in the last month, including the 6-, 12- and 28-ounce trays.

Those who have consumed the produce from these packages, containing cut and washed carrots, cauliflower and broccoli, have become infected with Cyclospora, a parasite that attacks digestive tracts and causes cyclosporiasis.

The trays were sold at Kwik Trip, FoodMax, Country Market, Meehan's, Potash, Demond and Kwik Star.

FDA, CDC, state, and local partners are now investigating several Cyclospora illnesses associated with recalled Del Monte 6oz and 12oz vegetable trays containing broccoli, cauliflower, carrots and dill dip that were sold by Kwik Trip/Kwik Star locations in IA, IN, MI, MN, and WI. So far, 212 cases of the infection have been confirmed in multiple states.

The CDC first reported the outbreak in mid-June with the cases in Wisconsin, Iowa, Minnesota and MI.

Most infected people reported buying and consuming the trays from Kwik Trip convenience stores, the CDC said. They range in age from 13 to 79 years old.

The parasite that causes this intestinal illness was found in 6 oz., 12 oz. and 28 oz. vegetable trays containing fresh broccoli, cauliflower, celery sticks, carrots and dill dip sold to select retailers in the above-mentioned states, as well as in IL and Indiana.

The trays being recalled have a "best if used by" date of June 17.

FDA has not identified which of the ingredients is the vehicle for this outbreak; each component of these vegetable trays is under consideration. The illness comes from the Cyclospora parasite, which can cause symptoms including explosive diarrhea, stomach pain and flu-like symptoms. The FDA is now reviewing distribution and supplier information related to the vegetable trays, as well, in its ongoing investigation.
