China's central bank moved to calm jittery financial markets on Tuesday after the yuan dropped through the psychologically significant 6.7 to the dollar mark, hitting its lowest in nearly a year.

China has issued a safety warning to its citizens travelling to the United States amid rising tensions between the sides over accusations of unfair trading practices and other disputes.

The widely-read Global Times tabloid said in an editorial that China must prepare for containment by the United States. "But the country will encounter more barriers in future development, to which we should learn to adapt", it said.

Both Chinese and USA business sources in China said there appeared to be little hope that the tariffs could be averted.

Longer term though a trade war posed a risk to the recovery of the whole global economy, he said.

A USA industry source said: "There is a 99 percent chance that tariffs go into force on Friday".

United States officials have warned American companies that operate in China of pain ahead, with the first round of tariffs set to take effect. The report said how, in 2016, after a Chinese student was shot and killed in Arizona, the Chinese Embassy in Washington told travelers to avoid "crime scenes and tough neighborhoods".
