After saving the first, Subasic was aided when Mario Fernandes missed the net with the third attempt.

Ivan Perisic hit the post for Croatia in a second half they controlled but they had to wait until the 101st minute to go in front, defender Vida heading in a corner before removing his shirt as he ran away in celebration.

Croatia is the first team to win consecutive penalty shootouts since Argentina in 1990 and it's the first time the host country has lost in a shootout since Italy in the same year.?

Both sides were probing for the second goal in the closing minutes of the first stanza, but they went into the dressing room deadlocked at 1-1.

In the 59th minute, Kramarić was involved again as the Balkans very almost took the lead.

Ivan Rakitic had a good opportunity from a free kick just outside the box after a quarter-hour but could not keep his shot near the target.

The hosts continued to put Croatia's defense under pressure but the Modric-led team kept their cool and equalized in ice-cold fashion six minutes from halftime through Andrei Krammaric.

Denis Cheryshev struck a stunning opener from distance to give the hosts the lead in the 31st minute but Croatia equalised through Andrej Kramaric just eight minutes later. Croatia's shooters did enough that Ivan Rakitic's successful penalty was the victor and set off another wild celebration with Subasic on the bottom of the pile.

Goal! Russia 2 (3), Croatia 2 (4). Striker Mario Mandzukic ran unchallenged into the penalty area and chipped a low ball back into the center where the unmarked Kramaric scored with a glancing header.

Luka Modric is the team's star but it is goalkeeper Subasic who got them past the finishing line against Russian Federation.

Russian Federation hope to continue their fairytale run in the tournament and will have the entire country behind them as they take one Croatia at the Sochi Stadium.

But nearly immediately after making their third sub in the 88th minute, Subasic fell to the pitch grabbing his hamstring, and he was forced to continue after receiving treatment and made a save at his near post.

However, the 90 minutes would produce no more goals, with the game forced into extra-time.

Russian Federation had an opportunity when Dejan Lovren gave the ball away in his own third, but was able to recover to muscle Fedor Smolov off the ball. "When you've got all these other teams, France, Belgium, England, that's the top teams from the beginning and we are the underdogs".

A goal-kick from Croatian goalkeeper Danijel Subasic saw left-back Ivan Strinic head the ball to the left middle to Ivan Perisic, who then flicked it ahead to Mandzukic.
