EU President to Trump: 'Appreciate Your Allies' as 'You Don't Have Many'

Trump said it was "very inappropriate" that the USA is contributing to the defence of Europe when one of its richest countries is supporting a major energy project with Moscow.

Earlier, European Council President Donald Tusk had asked Mr Trump to stop berating North Atlantic Treaty Organisation allies over military spending.

White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders announced hours after the exchange over Germany that Trump would meet later Wednesday with Merkel, as well as with French President Emmanuel Macron. Trump will have his first standalone summit with Putin in Helsinki, Finland, Monday.

The expanded pipeline aims to ensure a reliable supply of Russian gas to central and western Europe. As part of NATO's military training project in Iraq, military schools and academies will be built.

"We're supposed to be guarding against Russia and Germany goes out and pays billions and billions of dollars a year to Russia", Trump said in the presence of reporters at a pre-summit meeting at the residence of the USA ambassador to Belgium.

As you can imagine, more people are reading The Jerusalem Post than ever before.

"It's very unfair to our country, it's very unfair to our taxpayers", he said, adding, "We can't put up with it".

Trump predicted as he departed Washington that the "easiest" leg of his journey would be his scheduled sit-down Putin - a comment that did little to reassure allies fretting over his potential embrace of a Russian leader U.S. intelligence officials accuse of meddling in the 2016 elections to help Trump win.

Johnson has recently praised Trump, something the President appears to have noticed.

Despite Russia's aggressive moves in Ukraine and confirmed election meddling in the USA, the president wouldn't say if Putin was friend or foe.

The defense minister agreed with Trump about defense spending.

'We are protecting Germany, we are protecting France, we are protecting all of these countries and then numerous of the countries go out and make a pipeline deal with Russian Federation where they are paying billions of dollars into the coffers of Russian Federation.

"Dear America, appreciate your allies, after all you don't have that many", Tusk said, before reminding Trump that European troops had come to America's aid following the September 11, 2001 attacks on the United States.

The hint of USA withdrawal from Europe, while unlikely, indeed seems to have made many countries hike their defense spending.

"Germany will have nearly 70 per cent of their country controlled by Russian Federation with natural gas..."

Trump took Twitter swipes at Canada following the G7 summit - mostly over Canadian dairy trade policy - but reserved his most persistent and personal attacks for Trudeau himself, calling him "dishonest" and "weak" for telling the closing G7 news conference that Canada would not be "pushed around" on trade. And, dear Europe, spend more on your defence, because everyone respects an ally that is well-prepared and equipped.

Of Nato's 29 members, just five meet that target this year: the US, Greece, Estonia, the United Kingdom and Latvia.

But NATO diplomats say only two-thirds of the 28 allies, excluding the United States, have a realistic plan to hit that level by then. "I think these countries have to step it up, not over a 10-year period, but immediately".

Tusk issued a stern warning to Trump Tuesday as he signed a joint statement on cooperation between the European Union and NATO, "Dear America, appreciate your allies, after all you don't have that many".
