If Trump challenges the constitutional order, will Kavanaugh defend it?

Trump on Monday nominated District of Columbia Court of Appeals Judge Brett Kavanaugh to fill the impending vacancy of retiring Justice Anthony Kennedy on the high court.

A handful of Senate Democrats running for re-election in states that Trump won handily in 2016 could face a hard vote on the court nominee, potentially providing Republicans with an additional buffer if they decide to support the president.

When Justice Anthony Kennedy - a swing vote - announced his retirement last month it became clear that Roe v Wade, the landmark 1973 ruling that legalised abortion in the USA would soon be under threat. "While the House of Representatives is not involved in the nomination process, I'm hopeful the White House will work with the Senate, including Senators Collins and King, on approving a Justice for the Supreme Court who will serve Mainers and the Nation dutifully and honorably".

"I'm convinced if the president gave every American five million dollars, the left would still oppose him", Hannity said. The Supreme Court could be called upon to weigh in on these matters. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell also received a heads-up from the president.

The 52-year-old Hardiman was nominated to the federal trial court by George W. Bush in 2003 and to the 3rd Circuit in 2007 and was confirmed by the Senate in a 95-0 vote.

In 2017 he dissented when his appeals court declined to reconsider its decision upholding "net neutrality" regulations implemented under Obama - and later rescinded under Trump - requiring internet providers guarantee equal access to all web content.

Republican Sen. John Kennedy of Louisiana said he was bracing for a tough confirmation battle as Democrats focus on abortion. Ten Democrats from states that Trump won are up for re-election this fall and will be under tremendous pressure to back the president's nominee. "I believe that an independent judiciary is the crown jewel in our republic".

Over on MSNBC, Maddow's coverage looked markedly different, with discussions of the successful Republican effort to block a vote on President Barack Obama 's last Supreme Court nominee, and the ongoing investigation into the Trump campaign's contact with Russian Federation.

Senate Democratic leader Chuck Schumer says a weekend move by the Trump administration to undercut the Affordable Care Act is another reason for senators to closely scrutinize the president's Supreme Court nominee.

The White House invited a number of senators to attend the Monday night announcement, including Judiciary Committee Chairman Chuck Grassley, R-Iowa, and committee member Kennedy.

In a primetime announcement at the White House, Mr Trump praised his pick as a "brilliant jurist".

JCN played an active role in opposing the 2016 candidacy of Merrick Garland to the Supreme Court - a nomination that died during the final months of the Obama presidency - and supported the nomination and subsequent confirmation of Neil Gorsuch to the Supreme Court previous year.

With Democrats determined to vigorously oppose Trump's choice, the Senate confirmation battle is expected to dominate the months leading up to November's midterm elections. Throughout his three decades on the court, Kennedy was often the decisive vote in close cases, particularly those involving abortion rights.

McConnell reportedly anxious that Kavanaugh's paperwork trail could make him harder to confirm.

Trump is hoping to replicate his successful nomination of Justice Gorsuch a year ago.

His extensive record on what is widely viewed as the country's second most powerful court and in prior Washington jobs means his appointment promises to attract a barrage of questions during a contentious U.S. Senate confirmation process.

The White House had floated a list of four finalists, but multiple stories Tuesday suggest that President Trump's pick of Brett Kavanaugh for the Supreme Court was a no-brainer. So far, Trump has installed more than 20 appeals court judges and more than 16 trial court judges on the federal bench.

Meanwhile, liberal groups are already calling on two moderate Republican senators - Susan Collins of ME and Lisa Murkowski of Alaska - to reject the nominee.
