Joaquin Phoenix to play the Joker in new 'gritty' DC origins movie

But now Phoenix has reportedly finalized his deal to play Joker in this untitled standalone, which Phillips-the filmmaker behind The Hangover trilogy and the crime film War Dogs-will direct from a script he co-wrote with Scott Silver.

There is no release date as yet, which is unusual for a comic book film, although all signs point to this being quite different from the current DC and Marvel offerings.

The Joker origin movies has been in talks for a long time and rumours about the film featuring Joaquin Phoenix have been making the rounds. " This description, coupled with reports that DC has multiple Joker films in development, leads to the burning question: Who, exactly, is this "cautionary tale" for?" The film will be produced by Emma Tillinger Koskoff and executive produced by Richard Baratta and begins production later this year.

The film will also take place in the '80s and will not follow in the steps of a traditional comic-book movie, but appear more like a gritty crime drama, according to Variety.

"I see it as any other movie", he said. I don't really care about the genre, I care about the character and the filmmaker.

Jared Leto, however, will be reprising his role as The Joker in the sequel for Suicide Squad and a movie on The Joker and Harley Quinn.

The idea of changing the Joker from a young husband and future father into a solitary, social pariah living with his invalid mother makes the villain an even more tragic figure.
