Kavanaugh's paper trail becomes central to nomination fight in Senate

Senate Democrats are treating President Trump's selection of Judge Brett Kavanaugh for the Supreme Court as the end of civilization.

But that may be a tall order.

Speaking to Al Jazeera, Nihad Awad, the national executive director of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) said that the Senate must grill Kavanaugh on his views on civil rights and presidential powers. Jon Kyl. He also met with Sen.

"We've got a few Democrats on Justice Gorsuch and we're hopeful that we'll have a few of them on this nomination as well", McConnell said during his weekly press availability.

Former United States Solicitor General Gregory Garre discusses how Judge Brett Kavanaugh would likely approach business cases similarly to Judge Kennedy. Pence told reporters that Kavanaugh was a "good man".

If Democrats can convince voters in red states that Kavanaugh is a threat to Obama-era health care, they might be able to peel off the one or two GOP votes needed to sink Kavanaugh's nomination. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell also received a heads-up from the president. Chief Justice John Roberts may now become the swing vote.

The Democratic senator is up for re-election this year in a state Trump won in 2016.

"When should we as a society paternalistically decide that the participants in these sports and entertainment activities must be protected from themselves - that the risk of significant physical injury is simply too great even for eager and willing participants?"

Sens. Kirsten Gillibrand, D-N.Y., Cory Booker, D-N.J, and Bernie Sanders, I-V.T., spoke at a protest at the Supreme Court on Monday night. Sen.

By fall, the nomination may turn on a handful of senators who will be under enormous pressure ahead of the midterm elections. One of their hopes is to win governor's mansions this fall (see my in-need-of-an-update Top 10 governor's races here), and then be in a position to veto maps drawn by still-Republican-controlled legislatures, and then at least force those maps to go to courts, which have ruled in favor of Democrats lately.

"I would not support a nominee who demonstrated hostility to Roe v. Wade, because that would mean to me that their judicial philosophy did not include a respect for established decisions, established law", she said. He worked on the legal and ethical issues handled by that office. There are two pro-choice US senators who probably share (privately at least) the fears of abortion-rights supporters about Kavanaugh's impact on Roe v. Wade.

Trump nominated Kavanaugh after interviewing several candidates and eventually focusing his consideration on four: Kavanaugh, Michigan federal judge Raymond Kethledge, and federal judges Amy Coney Barrett and Thomas Hardiman.

Leo also spoke at length about what he expected to come out of that process. In the case decided Monday that had to do with attorneys' fees, there would be no majority if Kavanaugh were to withdraw.

As soon as he announced his retirement plans in late June, Democrats and liberal groups mobilized, saying another Trump appointee would threaten Roe as well as the 2015 ruling that legalized same-sex marriage nationwide and scores of other decisions that have shaped modern America.

Patrick Morrisey, now West Virginia's attorney general, said Tuesday afternoon that he expects Manchin to straddle the fence on Kavanaugh, calling it "the Joe Manchin way".

Kavanaugh in the past has made statements about respecting precedent that could help in winning over senators, particularly Murkowski and Collins.

Kavanaugh said the "radical" majority had essentially created a "constitutional principle as novel as it is wrong: a new right for unlawful immigrant minors in US government detention to obtain immediate abortion on demand".

Senate confirmation of Kavanaugh could create the most conservative court since the justices blocked a number of President Franklin D. Roosevelt's New Deal programs in the 1930s. Keep reading below to learn more about Trump's pick!
