A weapon was recovered at the scene, he said, but did not say whether the man was armed when he was shot. Three were released without facing charges, Guglielmi said.

"We find no documentation supporting him being [a] concealed carry [permit holder]", Chicago Police Superintendent Eddie Johnson said.

Chicago is still reckoning from the police shooting of Laquan McDonald, a black teenager killed in 2014.

An hour after the shooting, officers taped off an area around the man's vehicle at the gas station.

Harith Augustus, 37, of the 7000 block of South Merrill Avenue in Chicago's South Shore neighborhood was pronounced dead at Jackson Park Hospital at 5:50 p.m. Saturday, according to a statement from the Medical Examiner's Office.

The release of the body camera footage comes after heated protests on Saturday.

As in routine, the officer who fired will be placed on 30-day desk duty while the Civilian Office of Police Accountability investigates.

Just prior, officers on foot patrol noticed a man that they believed was armed.

Residents had asked for more police presence in the area where the shooting took place, Waller said.

The video appears to show a gun tucked into the suspect's waistband but it is unclear if and how much the video is edited.

But he said that too often good officers allow bad ones to "poison the barrel" by looking the other way and staying silent when they see other officers brutalizing members of the public. Police update after police shootingThe incident occurred near 71st Street and Clyde on the South Side, where crowds gathered afterward and, at times, scuffled with police. Four of the protesters have been arrested.

A police official says body camera and surveillance footage shows that Augustus had what appeared to be a gun.

Anthony Guglielmi, chief communications officer for the Chicago Police Department, later tweeted four protesters were arrested. He said the gun and the magazines had been sent for testing.

About 150 protesters took to the streets Saturday night on the South Side of Chicago after police officers fatally shot an African-American man following a confrontation.

By Saturday evening in tensions escalated between angry residents and baton-wielding officers. The police have claimed that the violence was in response to protestors throwing bottles and rocks, although as of yet there is no video footage to back this up.

Authorities haven't released the name of the man who died. He is then shot by one of the officers.
