Mattis Denies Report US Planning Missile Strike against Iran

Australia's prime minister, Malcolm Turnbull, downplayed the media report.

The report said that in addition to Australian facilities, British assets might be used. "Developing a picture is very different to actually participating in a strike", the source said.

The report came the same week that US President Trump tweeted a threat to Iranian President Hassan Rouhani.

The tweet prompted concerns of Trump's intentions toward Iran, especially in relation to his decision to withdraw the U.S. from the landmark Iran nuclear deal back in May.

The US has repeatedly threatened to throttle Iran's worldwide oil trade as it's moved closer to imposing sanctions on countries including key allies that don't eliminate or significantly cut imports of Iranian oil by November 4.

Mattis didn't mention that, but did address a reported by Australian military sources who claimed that President Trump is prepared to attack Iran militarily, and that the bombing could begin in the next month.

Australia is part of a multilateral agreement for intelligence sharing, alongside the US, Britain, New Zealand and Canada. That has sparked an angry response from Teheran, which has threatened to block the Strait of Hormuz, through which one-fifth of the world's oil passes in tankers. He was speaking to Iranian diplomats about relations with the U.S.

The poll also found that 60% of Americans surveyed were aware of the Trump tweet through news reports, with 12% saying they'd seen in directly on twitter.

The United States has been doing all it can to curb the growing influence of Iran in the region is support of its major allies; Saudi Arabia. "What we are looking to do is to ensure that all parties embrace peaceful and stable principles to ensure that our region is safe".

Mattis said there were "no policy changes" with respect to Russian Federation in the wake of the summit.

The United States has not instituted a policy of regime change or collapse in Iran, U.S. Defense Secretary Jim Mattis said on Friday, telling reporters that the goal was still to change Iran's behavior in the Middle East.
