National Hurricane Center monitoring two tropical disturbances

Nearly on cue, just days after Philip Klotzbach and the Tropical Meteorology Project at Colorado State announced a decrease in the seasonal forecast for Atlantic tropical cyclone activity, we've seen two systems develop in the Atlantic.

Tropical Depression Two (TD2) formed in the central Tropical Atlantic this morning.

Hurricane Beryl lost some strength overnight but is still packing maximum-sustained winds of 75 miles per hour as it moves toward the Caribbean.

Hurricane Beryl is located about 1140 miles east-southeast of the Lesser Antilles and is moving to the west at 14 mph (22 km/h). Upper-level winds are forecast to become unfavorable in a few days, and the depression is expected to weaken to a trough of low pressure before it reaches the Lesser Antilles. The government of France has issued a Tropical Storm Watch for Barbados, St. Lucia, Martinique, Guadeloupe, St. Martin, and St. Barthelemy.

An upgrade to a tropical storm occurs when cyclonic circulation becomes more organized and maximum sustained winds gust between 39 miles per hour and 73 miles per hour. TD2 is expected to strengthen into a weak Tropical Storm by Friday morning. We also have a tropical depression off the coast of the Carolinas. If it develops into a tropical storm it would be named Chris.

Then at the end of May, although the predicted number of storms remained the same, it was forecast that six would become hurricanes, two of them major. Cooler sea surface temperatures and strong trade winds created across the Atlantic Basin by the Pacific warm-water phenomena known as El Niño inhibit the growth of storms. A fast westward to west-northwestward motion is expected through the weekend of July 7 and 8.

A Hurricane Watch means that hurricane conditions are possible within the watch area.

BEWARE OF MISINFORMATION: As you seek online information on these tropical systems, watch out for "hype sites" and provocative social media posts that only showcase the more dire computer forecast model solutions. Hurricane Beryl is expected to produce 2 to 4 inches of rain through Sunday across the southern Leeward Islands and northern Windward Islands.
