Spurs snub motivated Alderweireld to do well at the World Cup

22-year-old Pavard has been hugely impressive at right-back for France, but he normally plays centre-half for his club side Stuttgart - but has also played in midfield, and he is seen a flawless like for like replacement for Alderweireld.

Alderweireld was in action at the World Cup in Russian Federation until the final weekend of the competition as Roberto Martinez's men finished third.

'I wanted to prove something to me, show that the period before the tournament in which I - for whatever reason - did not play, it was unjustified.

Meanwhile, Newcastle United striker Ayoze Perez is loving life at the Premier League club and has dismissed reports that he could move back to teams in his native Spain.

'I wanted to show that I am still the same Toby as in November'.

Toby Alderweireld has labelled his second-half of the season omission from Tottenham's starting line-up as "unjustified". "I want to be at Newcastle going forward, 100 per cent", Perez told Chronicle Live.

"To bring them back before that would be "OK, I have you for the first match of the season, but maybe I don't have you in three or four months".
