Teenager who posted dance videos on social media detained in Iran

In 2014, authorities sentenced six young men and women to suspended sentences of one year imprisonment and 91 lashes after they appeared in a video dancing to Pharrell Williams" song "Happy'. Since the 1979 Iranian revolution, for example, women have been forced to wear the headscarf.

Maedeh Hojabri was seen on State TV Friday appearing to confess to her "crimes" while crying and shaking. "I only do gymnastics". She wasn't the only to be detained on similar charges either.

Another person, Masih Alinejad, posted a video of herself defiantly dancing in a public park in Tehran.

Several people on social media have spoken up in support of Hojabri, and against the overall situation in Iran.

Ms Hojabri had posted around 300 videos on her account, many of which showed her dancing in both Iranian and Western styles without wearing the obligatory hijab.

It's not clear what sentence Hojabri might face for her dancing videos but she has been reportedly released on bail along with the other three women.

Hojabri was an Instagram star with tens of thousands of followers but also used multiple accounts on other social media.

"You will be laughed at if you tell people anywhere in the world that 17 and 18-year-old girls are arrested for their dance, happiness and beauty on charges of spreading indecency, while child rapists and others are free", wrote Iranian blogger and political dissident Hossein Ronaghi-Maleki. "Because for them, it's unbelievable!" the comment read.

Women in Iran have been protesting against Iran's strict modesty laws for years now through dance.

Hojabri had been dancing in a public forum, which is frowned upon in conservative Iranian circles, and doing so without the headscarf prescribed by Iran's clerical rulers.

This isn't the first time people have been arrested for dancing.

The group was later charged over seeking to "change lifestyles and promote a lack of hijab", a reference to head coverings for women.
