Thai cave rescue: Boys in quarantine at hospital unable to see family

"Hooyah", the Thai Navy SEALS wrote on their Facebook page Monday, referring to the boys' soccer team, the Wild Boars.

The generals and other officials overseeing the desperate operation to rescue 12 young soccer players and their coach from a flooded cave labyrinth in Thailand's sweltering far north were only half joking when they quipped Monday that success was in the hands of the rain god Phra Pirun.

Four members of the Wild Boar soccer team were rescued Sunday and are in a hospital.

Chiang Rai Gov.Narongsak Osatanakorn said Tuesday's rescue operation began at 10.08 a.m. and involves 19 divers.

Authorities have not revealed at this stage when the rescue operation would resume for the remaining four boys and their coach, who have been trapped in the cave since June 23.

But with oxygen levels inside dropping to unsafe lows and the prospect of heavy rains flooding the area completely, authorities decided they had to move quickly, and take the group out through the water-filled tunnels.

Four boys and their coach remain in the cave Monday, CNN reports.

The Guardian reported that the four boys who were rescued last night are in good overall health and should be able to see their families later today, according to a key health official.

"On behalf of the United States, congratulations to the Thai Navy SEALs and all on the successful rescue of the 12 boys and their coach from the treacherous cave in Thailand".

The rescued kids are now in the hospital, where they should receive the proper care before being released to their families. The same divers were deployed Monday because they were familiar the cave, authorities said. Billionaire Elon Musk dispatched a team of engineers, and President Donald Trump said Sunday the U.S.is working very closely with Thailand's military government on the rescue.

Speaking to reporters after the news conference, Narongsak said that while Musk's technology was "good and sophisticated", it was "not practical for the mission".

The rescued boys were being treated by medics at the field hospital, and were later airlifted to a larger nearby hospital. "We heard four boys are out but we do not know who they are".

But Narongsak said earlier that mild weather and falling water levels over the last few days had created optimal conditions for an underwater evacuation that won't last if it rains again.

Five more boys, including the coach, are still trapped in the Tham Luang cave.

Heavy rain soaked the area overnight, increasing the risks in what has been called a "war with water and time" to save the boys.

Relatives said the boys had been inside the labyrinthine complex during the dry season. A retired Thai Navy SEAL assisting with the operation died Friday after running out of oxygen, underlining the danger of the rescue.

Another video from Thai PBS showed an ambulance arriving at a hospital in the city of Chiang Rai, near the cave network. Two of them possibly have a lung infection but all eight are generally "healthy and smiling", he said.

The boys have been brought out in pairs, each guided by two expert divers.

The trapped boys have been divided into groups.

The boys brought out of the dark, winding cave on Monday are "safe and conscious", he told the media.

"I just want to give him a hug and say I missed you", she said. The most unsafe part is the first kilometer, during which the divers and boys are required to squeeze through a narrow, flooded channel.
