Trump nominates Judge Brett Kavanaugh to the Supreme Court

Kavanaugh, an appellate court judge based in Washington D.C. with ties to the George W. Bush administration, was also a high school classmate of New York Yankees general manager Brian Cashman and Arizona Cardinals president Michael Bidwill at Washington's Georgetown Prep.

It's official! President Donald Trump has named Brett Michael Kavanaugh has his Supreme Court Justice nominee! Others have seen an even deeper ulterior motive in the choice of a man who is seen as a Bush loyalist, a fact that should have put off Trump: Kavanaugh sees the United States presidency as such a unique and challenging job that he believes the White House occupant should be shielded from indictment, prosecution, or interrogation while in office.

The White House wants Kavanaugh to be in place by October 1, when the court's next term formally opens, and Majority Leader Mitch McConnell has said the Senate will vote to confirm Kennedy's successor in the fall. A more conservative majority could be more willing to uphold state restrictions on abortion, if not overturn the 45-year-old landmark Roe v. Wade decision that established a woman's constitutional right.

Everything U.S. Circuit Judge Brett Kavanaugh has worked on in this life prepared him for this moment, and there was no way he was going to mess it up.

Hours after President Trump made known his choice to replace retiring Justice Anthony Kennedy with Kavanaugh, Akhil Amar, considered one of America's foremost legal minds, pitched in, calling him a "superb nominee" and warning that any Democratic opposition to him would be a mistake.

His extensive record on what is widely viewed as the country's second most powerful court and in prior Washington jobs means his appointment promises to attract a barrage of questions during a contentious U.S. Senate confirmation process.

He is the kind of judge a President Jeb Bush or Mitt Romney would have picked - a man with an established legal pedigree and a reputation as a reliably conservative jurist. Susan Collins of ME and Lisa Murkowski of Alaska, to oppose any nominee who threatens Roe v. Wade. He noted that he has taught at Harvard Law School, where he was hired by former dean Elena Kagan, appointed by Obama to the Supreme Court in 2010. "I will tell each senator I revere the constitution".

Justin Walker, a law professor at the University of Louisville who clerked for both Kavanaugh and Kennedy, said Kavanaugh will "never, ever go wobbly" and deviate from conservative principles. No deference should be afforded there, or any other area where the government has been delegated authority, but where our laws make it clear the judiciary has the last word. The Supreme Court could be called upon to weigh in on these matters. He was not confirmed until three years later, with Democrats saying he was too partisan and inexperienced.

As for the right, many will likely back Trump's pick in the hopes of pushing the high court in a conservative direction, but not everyone is pleased. The campaign follows an earlier one from the organization-entitled "Another Great Justice" and costing seven figures-that was launched the day after Justice Kennedy announced his retirement.

He wrote a Minnesota law review article in 2009 arguing that presidents should be shielded from criminal investigations and civil lawsuits while in office.

The Supreme Court is the highest court in the USA and gives ultimate decisions on disputes between states and the federal government.
