Williams knows Wimbledon’s top-10 seeds stat needs asterisk

Williams hasn't faced a seeded player yet, and she won't on Tuesday, either, instead facing 52nd-ranked Camila Giorgi of Italy.

The destruction further paves the way for Williams to complete her comeback since having a baby, with an eighth title that would draw the 36-year-old level with Margaret Court's all-time record 24 career singles majors.

It's also the only Grand Slam tournament in the half-century professional era with zero top-10 seeds in the women's final eight.

Having missed Wimbledon a year ago while she prepared to have her first child in September, Serena is in pole position to win her first Grand Slam crown since becoming a mother.

Kiki Bertens celebrates victory against Venus Williams.

Cibulkova advanced to her third Wimbledon quarterfinal, following runs in 2011 and 2016.

"This is only my fourth tournament back", Williams said.

"I think", Federer said when it was over, "I can be very pleased". She advanced Monday with a 6-3, 7-6 (5) victory over Belinda Bencic and will next face Daria Kasatkina of Russian Federation.

Bertens will play Julia Goerges for a semi-final spot after the German 13th seed ousted Croatian Donna Vekic 6-3 6-2.

"I'm not feeling the pressure because I'm not looking on the seeded or who is left or not", Kerber said of her improved title chances.

Of ther other quarter-finalists, only Kerber and former French Open champion Jelena Ostapenko have won Grand Slams. I know it's more hard now, there are many more demands on your time etc and it was such a big title for her because she'd been in three finals before and for Romania blah blah blah... but really?

Bertens, who was contemplating retirement past year after losing her enthusiasm for the sport, is the first Dutch woman to reach the Wimbledon quarter-finals since Michaella Krajicek in 2007. Icon, leader, supermum, her inexorable return from the maternity ward to the zenith of her sport has been the story of these championships. She was the lone top-10 women's seed still around at this upset-filled tournament, and now she's also gone.
