Air quality to worsen as smoke returns

Smoky conditions are expected to persist into Tuesday with some clearing on Wednesday when a westerly flow will clear things up later in the week, according to Global BC's chief meteorologist Mark Madryga. Smoke could worsen into unhealthy levels by Monday, the agency said.

Thick smoke from wildfires raging in British Columbia, Canada, and in the eastern portion of the state is expected to spread into western Washington starting Sunday.

"Wholesale improvement to air quality is not likely until midweek".

Previous year saw several days of hazardous air quality in September, with Spokane pinned between wildfires to the north, south and east. However, it's not only B.C. struggling with hazy skies. People with chronic sinus issues, chronic lung issues, and asthma may experience symptoms as well due to small particulate matter in the air.

The Clean Air Agency is urging everyone to stay indoors as much as possible and keep windows closed. Children and the elderly should avoid outdoor physical activity altogether.

Changes in wind direction have brought over more smoke to the area from wildfires around northern and central Washington, as well as from British Columbia. Smoke may not affect all areas at all times.

The haze is better in some areas, but Environment Canada is warning of reduced visibility and air quality.
