Amazon Working on Tablo-Like Networked DVR

Amazon Working on Tablo-Like Networked DVR

Connecting to Amazon's Fire TV boxes using the same tech as its Echo speakers, the new device will allow users to record live TV and stream the video to a smartphone for later viewing.

Amazon was tipped to be in the process of developing a device that would compete directly with TiVo and Slingbox from Dish.

It's possible Amazon will reveal this new DVR device at the same time as the refresh of its Amazon Fire TV stick.

Oddly, the report then notes that "Amazon hasn't made a final decision on rolling out the streaming feature" and that "plans could either be canceled or delayed".

Codenamed Frank, the new device will have its own storage for shows, and connect to TVs via Amazon's existing Fire TV box, according to Bloomberg.

Tivo shares registered a decline of more than 4 percent today, presumably due to the Bloomberg report, while Roku shares were down 1.7 percent.

Fire TV devices now are capable of streaming live video from a selection of content providers, such as HBO and Showtime, but the devices can't store video locally.

The Fire TV Cube meshes the Amazon Echo with the Fire Stick to deliver a high-tech streaming box with 4K ultra HD capabilities that can also tell you the weather. Amazon is also working to better highlight live content to Fire TV users.

It's not yet known if this DVR device will include service with Amazon Prime.

The company already sells Fire TV streamers, the new Fire TV Cube and TVs from Toshiba that have the Fire TV interface built in.

However, Amazon's Alexa software has a wider range of skills on offer that enable it to link up with and control more third-party devices around the home.
