AMD debuts new 32-core desktop processor that outperforms Intel

But given the fact that it has blown Intel Core i9 out of the water in terms of performance, the price tag seems plausible.

According to details which were apparently accidentally posted on the AMD France web page, as spotted by, it's billed as the "most powerful desktop processor in the world", and in the Cinebench R15 CPU benchmark it hit 5,099 on average. It is certainly the burliest high-end desktop (HEDT) CPU available. Launching with some rather aggressive pricing, the flagship Threadripper 2990WX, priced at U.S. $1799 will go against Intel's Core i9-7980XE and offer more cores (14) at a $100 lower price.

AMD'S 12-core, 24-thread Threadripper 2920WX and the 24-core, 48-thread Threadripper 2970WX and the 12-core, 24-thread Threadripper 2920WX will launch later in the year. These will be clocked up to the same speeds as the 2990WX, at 3GHz base and 4.2GHz boost, and will also have access to an identical 64MB of L3 cache.

For all that extra cash, you get so much potential compute power that the Threadripper 2990WX is overkill for pretty much anyone other than people who need heaps and heaps of multi-threaded performance from their CPU. This model has a 3.5GHz base speed and 4.4GHz boost speed, 32MB of L3 cache, and a 180W TDP rating, and also supports 64 PCIe lanes. This will only spell more trouble for Intel's enthusiast HEDT offerings since both the performance and prices are in AMD's favor. Interestingly, AMD ran a series of 11 games on PCs powered by both chips, and found that the system with the Core i9-7900X offered about 6 percent higher frame rates on average than the Threadripper-powered one did.

All the CPUs feature AMD's new boosting algorithms including features such as Precision Boost and Precision Boost Overdrive, and of the chips use the existing TR4 motherboard socket, which means they'll fit into any existing X399 motherboard on the market with a BIOS update. The chip's performance goes up to a maximum of 4.2Ghz with overclocking. The Threadripper 2950X will release on August 31, followed by the Threadripper 2970WX and Threadripper 2920X sometime in October. Pre-sales will begin from today, and the CPU will officially go on sale on August 13. The new X chips continue to consume 180 watts.

Unlike AMD's mainstream Ryzen 5 and Ryzen 7 chips, the second-generation Threadripper CPUs do not include coolers in their boxes.
