Annual Perseid Meteor Shower Coming This Weekend

Well...anywhere! NASA said anyone watching should be able to see about 60 to 70 meteors an hour during the shower's peak.

The annual Perseid meteor shower is coming this weekend. According to Space, the shower will peak on August 11 and August 12, but NASA meteor expert Bill Cooke stated one can expect a better show on August 12.

"This year the moon will be near new moon, it will be a crescent, which means it will set before the Perseid show gets underway after midnight", Cooke said. The best views will come before dawn on the 13th, Astronomy magazine predicts. 2016 was an outburst year, which means the rate can be between 150-200 meteors an hour.

Pull up a chair and enjoy this years edition of the Perseid Meteor Shower.

The particles, many no bigger than a grain of sand or a pea, blast across the sky at some 132,000 miles per hour and disintegrate high up in our atmosphere after making a brilliant flash of light. The Perseids radiate from the constellation Perseus in the eastern horizon and is associated with the debris of comet Swift-Tuttle which last passed by Earth in 1992. But Cooke said the Perseids are rich in fireballs, so the show should be spectacular.

So for the best look, lie back and watch the night sky, looking toward the north, and watch one of nature's greatest shows pass overhead. If you can find a secluded area away from city lights you will see more flashes.

Of course, the one other thing you need to view the meteors is clear skies, and we may have those.
