Google acknowledges it tracks users even with location setting disabled

Search, Maps, and Google Location Services are explicitly named but there might be others as well. Others, however, may take issue with Google continuing to track device location for some services even after you told it not to. Although Google has not revealed what does "some location data" really mean, the earlier AP report claimed Google apps automatically store time-stamped location data without asking.

Google clarified to users that it still keeps a track of their location even after they turn off location history, reports Associated Press. The clarification comes through a change in the text on the help page for its location tracking tools.

AP reported this afternoon that Google had updated a page that explained how the Location History setting works. "We have been updating the explanatory language about Location History to make it more consistent and clear across our platforms and help centers", a spokesperson said in a statement. It also acknowledges that "some location data may be saved as part of your activity on other services, like Search and Maps".

"As the (AP) story notes, we make sure Location History users know that when they disable the product, we continue to use location to improve the Google experience when they do things like perform a Google search or use Google for driving directions".

Huge tech companies are under increasing scrutiny over their data practices, following a series of privacy scandals at Facebook and new data-privacy rules recently adopted by the European Union.

In January, the Quartz published an article which states that the data recorded by Google from your smartphone is staggering.

"The notion of having two distinct ways in which you control how your location data is stored is inherently confusing", he said Thursday.

In order to fully prevent their location from being tracked, users must adjust their "web and app activity" settings as well, the AP found. "When you turn off Location History for your Google Account, it's off for all devices associated with that Google Account".

Critics say Google's insistence on tracking its users' locations stems from its drive to boost advertising revenue.
