Halep outlasts Stephens in 3 to win Rogers Cup

"I think I got better today".

"I'm very happy to come through and get a little bit better during the match".

Romanian Halep will now meet the victor of the late semi-final between defending champion Elina Svitolina of Ukraine and U.S. Open victor Sloane Stephens for the title on Sunday.

Numerous forehand errors by Halep gave Stephens a 4-0 lead in the tiebreak and the American went up 6-4 before Halep rallied, crushing a backhand down the line to earn her first set point, which she converted. Her week included a three hour seven minute win over Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova that was played over two days.

Halep let off steam at the Women's Tennis Association after her quarterfinal Friday for giving her a hard schedule on a week in which she played twice on the one day due to a rain delay.

Halep won her third title of the year and 18th overall.

In a rematch of Halep's French Open final victory, she overcame Stephens in the match that saw 15 service breaks.

"It's an awesome feeling to be able to talk again at this ceremony as a victor", Halep said. But the American broke Halep with a forehand victor and held two set points on the Romanian's serve at 6-5.

"I thought I played well, I thought she played well", said Stephens.

Halep fended off four set points to claim a back-and-forth first set in a tiebreak after storming to a 4-1 lead before U.S. Open champion Stephens fought back to level. She seems to have acquired this virtue in her favor from her first round match with Magdalena Rybarikova when she was down a set and crawled back point by point to win two straight sets and win the match.

Stephens added three more breaks to take the second set, but lost her serve to open the third. The Ukrainian eventually locked on in the ninth game to take a break of her own, but the burst was short-lived and she again lost her serve and with it the set.
