Hurricane Hector tracks toward Hawaii

Hurricane Hector is on track to hit the Big Island of Hawaii according to CNN.

Hurricane Hector was swirling harmlessly in the Pacific about 1,700 miles east of Big Island but it grew into a category three hurricane on Friday as its maximum sustained winds reached 120mph. It was projected to gradually weaken while still remaining a hurricane over the next several days.

Hurricane Hector is gaining strength as it barrels through the Pacific - and could make landfall in Hawaii by the middle of the week.

An erupting Hawaii volcano is causing fewer earthquakes, and there's less lava coming out of an eruption site in a neighbourhood just as the Big Island braces for an approaching hurricane.

"While the official forecast track continues to lie south of the Hawaiian Islands, it is too soon to determine what kind of impacts might occur in the state, since track errors can be large at long time ranges", the NHC said.

It had maximum sustained winds of 130 miles per hour and moving at 12 miles per hour.

Scientists have said there is a great deal of uncertainty over how hurricanes and volcanoes might interact, including whether low atmospheric pressure from a major cyclone could help trigger an eruption, and much remains unknown on the subject.

Hector was a Category 3 storm early Sunday as it churned toward the Hawaiian Islands, an archipelago that includes the Big Island.

"The track of the hurricane still has the center passing well south of the main Hawaiian island at this time", Brink said Sunday morning.

Lava spewed from Kilauea since May 3 has covered 13.4 square miles (34.7 sq km) of the island's surface, destroying more than 700 homes and displacing thousands of residents.
