Hurricane Lane Heads Over Pacific, Could Get Close to Hawaii

The storm had intensified slightly since the last report, with maximum sustained winds of 125 miles per hour with stronger gusts, traveling west at 14 miles per hour. "Lane is forecast to cross into the central Pacific basin later today".

Forecasters said they also expect a large swell generated form Lane to reach southeast and east-facing shores of Hawaii Island and Maui as early as Sunday night Hawaii-time into Monday.

Early Saturday, the storm was more than 1,200 miles east-southeast of Hilo, Hawaii, with maximum sustained winds of 130 mph - the lowest threshold for a Category 4.

A National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration G-IV aircraft plans to do sampling in the environment around the Hawaiian Islands and Hurricane Lane today.

Hurricane Lane continues to churn over the Central Pacific as a Category 3 hurricane.

Hawaii may have a hurricane on its horizon next week - though it's far too early to tell how close it will get.

The Weather Service said that regardless of Lane's eventual track and intensity, computer models are pointing to an extremely moist tropical airmass moving over the islands beginning around Wednesday through the end of the week.

According to the CPHC, large swells generated by Lane will impact the Hawaiian Islands this week, producing large and unsafe surf, as well as strong currents, along some shorelines.

The initial motion estimate is 285/13 kt.

The latest NHC advisory warns that strengthening is expected over the weekend.

Hurricane Lane, 5-day forecast track., 5 a.m. 8.20.18. The storm is predicted to rapidly intensify over the coming days, due to its tight inner core and warm water below. And, thereafter, westerly shear should induce a slow weakening trend.
