Last solar eclipse of 2018 to occur today

As the sun will never be completely covered, spectators are advised to wear solar safety glasses at all times and photographic equipment will need filters.

Solar eclipses occur when the moon passes across the face of the sun, as viewed from Earth.

The partial solar eclipse is expected to take place during early hours of August 11, but only some parts of the planet will be able to witness it.

Depending on where you are in the world, you may have been able to witness the Moon slightly obscure the Sun in a partial solar eclipse today. The peak of the eclipse will be around 11:46am CEST, ending around 1:30pm CEST.

The total eclipse lasted 1 hour, 42 minutes and 57 seconds, though a partial eclipse preceded and follows, meaning the moon will spend a total of almost 4 hours in the Earth's umbral shadow, according to NASA.

You can see the viewing times for a few locations in Newfoundland and Quebec in the table below.

This weekend's solar eclipse will be a partial eclipse of the sun, not the spectacular total solar eclipse that thrilled millions a year ago. As the moon is much smaller than the sun it can't fully hide the sun when it is at a far point in it's orbit and so a ring of light is visible around the moon, this is called an annular eclipse. Also during that eclipse, the moon crossed the ecliptic going from north to south, the descending node of its orbit.

On July 27, we had a stunning eclipse of the moon - the longest total lunar eclipse of the century. You'll have to wait until January 21, 2019 for the next eclipse.

What is a partial solar eclipse?

The solar eclipse will be visible in Russian Federation, northern parts of China, Mongolia, Northern Europe and northern Canada as well as the Arctic Ocean. According to the map, the partial solar eclipse will be seen over the North Pole and eastern parts of Siberia. If done otherwise, it will still remain a good idea not just limited to solar eclipse.

Making a pinhole in cardboard and holding it above a piece of paper on the ground can project the image of the solar eclipse without gazing at the Sun.
