Leaked recording: Nunes speaks at Rep. McMorris Rodgers fundraiser

Nunes made the comment at a fundraiser for House Republican Conference Chairwoman Cathy McMorris Rodgers, according leaked audio obtained by NBC and played on the Rachel Maddow Show.

Later, he talks about the midterms and the honest need to keep a Republican majority in both the House and Senate, something Democrats are hoping to clinch.

Special Counsel Robert Mueller has been investigating Russian interference in the 2016 presidential election and whether there was any collusion with the Trump campaign.

In it, Nunes discusses how House Republicans still want to impeach Rosenstein-despite assurances from the leadership that that wasn't a priority- but are only waiting to do so until after the Senate confirms Trump's Supreme Court pick, Brett Kavanaugh.

It is clear that he intends to undermine the investigation because he lists keeping control of the House as an alternative to Attorney General Jeff Sessions - who is recused from the investigation and all related matters on the advice of ethics experts - taking control of the probe or to Mueller finding the president to be innocent.

Nunes' spokesman called the congressman's comments "sensible ideas", The Hill reported.

It seems Nunes is anxious about whether Republicans would be able to make up the majority in the upcoming November elections and the fact that the GOP is the only thing stopping the removal of Donald Trump as president.

Nunes, along with Rep. Jim Jordan (R-Ohio), introduced articles of impeachment against Rosenstein last week.

On those tapes, Nunes, who didn't know he was being recorded, can be heard at a private function explaining that Congress - particularly the House Freedom Caucus - has been all bark and no bite on Rosenstein impeachment proceedings because it would distract Congress from bigger issues. If so, that's leaves roughly a month of time before elections for Nunes and Friends to renew Rosenstein impeachment efforts.

"If we do not keep the majority, all of this goes away". "And then take the risk of not getting Kavanaugh confirmed", Nunes said.

Ryan said in July, "if this were to pass through the House, then what it would do is tie the Senate into knots ..." Since Jeff Sessions is recused on the matter of the Russian Federation probe, the responsibility of deciding whether or not to fire Mueller, if Trump were to ask for this, falls to Rosenstein.

"This is all political", Nunes said.
