Massive rogue planet crowned with a glowing aurora found wandering the galaxy

The rogue body is almost large enough to be considered a gas giant planet and it offers researchers the opportunity to study these massive objects, shedding light on their magnetic realities.

"Detecting SIMP J01365663+0933473 with the VLA through its auroral radio emission also means that we may have a new way of detecting exoplanets, including the elusive rogue ones not orbiting a parent star", Caltech's Gregg Hallinan added in the statement.

Astronomers have stumbled upon an enormous planet which is some 20 light years away from our Sun.

A brown dwarf is an object too large to be a planet, but isn't big enough to sustain the nuclear fusion of hydrogen in its core that is typical of stars.

The unusual object, called SIMP J01365663+0933473, has a magnetic field which is more than 200 times stronger than the magnetic field field of Jupiter, according to the study published in The Astrophysical Journal Supplement Series.

The extrasolar object, about a dozen times more massive than Jupiter, is located some 20 light-years from Earth, showed the findings made using the US National Science Foundation's Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array (VLA) telescope. When researchers observed it again in a new study at even higher radio frequencies, they confirmed that its magnetic field was even stronger than first measured.

Although this particular object was first picked up on in 2016, it was thought to be one of five recently discovered brown dwarfs.

Nevertheless, we still can't figure out how brown dwarf stars get auroras, considering they're nowhere near any type of stellar winds.

But as far as we know, brown dwarfs aren't in the vicinity of any stellar winds, making their auroras something of a puzzle.

Last year, an independent team of scientists discovered that SIMP J01365663+0933473 was part of a very young group of stars.

The object is what scientists call a brown dwarf. The enigmatic celestial body was found to have a planetary mass and weigh 12.7 times more than Jupiter, despite having a radius only 1.22 times bigger than that of the gas giant.

According to the study, the huge planet possesses a powerful magnetic field over 200 times stronger than that of Jupiter and can generate dazzling auroras outshining Earth's polar lights.

Studies that followed it demonstrated that certain brown dwarfs display strong auroras, similar to the ones seen in the Solar System's giant planets.

Lead researcher Melodie Kao from Caltech said in a statement.
