Namibia to take on Kenya … as Rugby Africa Gold Cup concludes

Namibia booked their place at the World Cup for the sixth successive time on Saturday with a 53-28 victory over Kenya.

Both the Africa qualifier and the Repechage victor will be in Pool B at the World Cup along with defending champions New Zealand, South Africa and Italy.

Kenya's dream of qualifying for their first Rugby World Cup is not over, but they now face the prospect of taking on Canada, Hong Kong and Germany in November's round-robin Repechage competition in Marseille for the final place.

The performance of Kenya's national rugby team in Namibia will not dampen its resolution to compete at its inaugural World Cup in Japan in 2019, according to head coach Ian Snook.

Van der Westhuizen turned over the ball for his second try when he combined well with Jan-Pieter Van Lill at the start of the second half for a 29-7 lead.

Simbas captain Davis Chenge added: "The mood in the camp is encouraging".

But under De Villiers' watch, the Sables have not won a match in the qualifiers after being held to a surprising home draw by Morocco, losing to Kenya in the closing stages of the match in Nairobi, being beaten by Tunisia and then also losing to Namibia in Bulawayo.

Kenya Rugby Union must, therefore, concentrate on rebuilding the team for the 2023 Rugby World Cup.

The match was a straight shootout for automatic qualification, with Namibia proving their value as overwhelming favourites with a 22-7 halftime lead. "We have some time to work on our mistakes and I hope by the time we travel to France we will be much better".

Speaking to the media after the match Namibia's Coach Phil Davies said he was pleased with the ambitions of his side. "There's a lot to play for with World Cup qualification on the line, so they'll come with everything they've got". We have an average age of 24 years now compared to 31 at the previous tournament.

"We played well today, the team stuck to the game plan".

Both teams have amassed four wins in the six-team competition and face off in a must-win clash to see who will qualify directly for the Rugby World Cup in Japan in 2019. "We have depth now", he explained.

Nicolas Pompigne-Mognard, Founder and CEO of APO Group (www.APO-opa.com), the main Official Partner of Rugby Africa, said: "As the main Official Partner of Rugby Africa, we will put all our efforts in ensuring the world knows about Namibia's participation in the World Cup".
