"When they haven't got the ball or bat in their hands, they're a little bit (agitated)".

Pope made his Surrey first-team debut in the County Championship in August 2017 against Middlesex at The Oval, in the infamous match that was abandoned after a crossbow was sacked on to the pitch after tea during the final day's play.

He was also a regular in the English developmental squads during 2016-17 and played for the Lions in their first-class fixture against India A last month where he scored 50 not out in a 253 runs victory at Blackfinch New Road, Worcester. Pope, who in common with county team-mate Sam Curran - the man-of-the-match at Edgbaston after starring with both bat and ball - is aged just 20, has been in fine form for Championship leaders Surrey this season.

The last time England were at Lord's against Pakistan in May, Pope spent the first day of the Test around the team to get a feel for the global set-up. He has scored only two 30+ scores in 12 innings and has an average of 27.84 after 15 Tests.

Although he took three catches at Edgbaston, he also dropped three, including Virat Kohli on 21.

Following England's left-handed batsmens' troubles against Indian spinner Ravichandran Ashwin, Pope offers another welcome right-handed option for England.

England have yet to decide whether Chris Woakes, a fellow pace-bowling all-rounder, or off-spinner Moeen Ali will replace Stokes. That's a massive thing for a young lad to do, especially when you're just finding your way in the game.

"I know the hotel we'll stay in the night before - I know where I need to be and when I need to be there".

"Of course you learn by watching, and how they go about practice but you have to be proactive".

The young Wicketkeeper Pope has so far played 15 first-class matches scoring 1012 run.

Surrey's crop of exciting youngsters had already been highlighted by all-rounder Sam Curran - also 20 - whose man-of-the-match performance at Edgbaston had much to do with England going 1-0 up, and the call-up of his county colleague was another indication of director of cricket Alec Stewart's determination to produce not only a successful team, but players fit to move up to worldwide level. Now, well into his thirties, Best played his last competitive game nearly a year ago.

"We are going to bowl first, with the weather around it gives us a chance to take wickets early on", said Root at the toss.

I always say if you're good enough, you're good enough. "From the people I've spoken to, they've given me confidence".
